SHIFT AND HOLD
Fenella Belle and Stacey Evans
Shift and Hold invites the viewer to enter a sea of ethereal blue and lose themselves in a world that is familiar, strange, and ever changing. In the spirit of Man Ray’s rayographs, Belle and Evans have populated these large cyanotypes with ordinary objects culled from the detritus of their studio practice… a power cord here, a cut stencil there. The results are seven foot tall transparent photograms that are both specific and mysterious. The panels are hung to encourage visitors to enter and move through them, the lightweight silk subtly moving in response to the viewer’s passage. Layers of imagery momentarily overlap, “held” by the viewer’s impulse to stop and look, then shift and dissolve again as they move forward through the piece. Shift and Hold puts the viewer in the creative driving seat, allowing and encouraging them to create their own sense of visual rhythm and play.
