John Grant encouraged me to buy my first iPhone before we traveled by train to photograph the west coast. Our relationship was in its fifth year, I was 37, and John was 63. The year was 2010, and we would marry three years later.
While John photographed ‘Wake’ by Richard Serra at the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, Washington – I took my first iPhone selfie. This photograph established how I often document our wanderings, me in the foreground waiting as John makes a photograph. I take the photograph quickly, John often unaware. Making these candid portraits has become a family ritual.
