Trainscapes
Artist Statement
Trainscapes is a photographic essay of life and landscape in motion. Through a panel of glass I am a distant observer passing through fringe territories on the predetermined path and schedule of railways. My photographs exhibit a sequence of time, topography, and narrative.
Peering through the window I stare off in the distance searching everyday details of the landscape. I am interested in the atmosphere of varying days and regions, structures found in the built environment, patterns of nature and human interaction. Train routes are my consistent access point to document how we exist in relation to the land.
The photographs provide a glimpse of time and place, each scene expresses how our land is developed through the power of human interests and forces of nature. The imagery shares a way of life that changes according to geography. The photographs in the collection are captioned by content, state, time of day, season, year, and route to establish the sense of place in history.
